Netherlands – Ukraine Match Preview

  • European Championship winners in 1988 – against the Soviet Union of all teams – the Netherlands make a triumphant return to this tournament after missing out on the 2016 edition. The Dutchmen are flying of late, scoring 2+ goals in seven straight games – their best-ever scoring form going into a Euro finals – and with the Amsterdam ArenA hosting all three of their group fixtures, the ‘Oranje’ will fancy their chances of progressing.
  • The Netherlands were also the most potent Group C team in qualifying, scoring an average of three goals a game, and subsequently five of their six wins beat a -1 handicap. They’re unbeaten in six of their last seven games as favourites too (W5, D1, L1), whilst avoiding defeat from a losing position in two.
  • After splitting from the Soviet Union, it took Ukraine until 2012 before making their European Championship bow, but this will be their third consecutive appearance at the finals. Whilst Andriy Shevchenko’s men have won just two of their last nine games (D4, L3), they did top a Euro qualifying group that included Portugal, and will believe they can progress past the group stage for the first time ever.
  • In fact, Ukraine are the only Group C nation that topped their qualifying group, during a campaign that saw five of their eight qualifiers produce over 2.5 goals (W6, D2), and an average of 10.63 corners per game. Furthermore, Ukraine haven’t conceded 2+ goals in six straight outings, although the last six times they did came vs top-20 ranked nations.
  • Players to watch: Netherlands’ MVP, Memphis Depay, scored four of their last six goals, all in succession – the first player to achieve such a feat since Robin van Persie in 2013. One to watch for Ukraine is Ruslan Malinovskyi; he’s contributed to a whopping 15 goals in his previous 11 Serie A appearances for Atalanta (six goals, nine assists).
  • Hot stat: The Netherlands have won five of their last seven opening games of a major championship (D1, L1) – four ‘to nil’
