West Brom – QPR Match Preview

  • Following a 1-1 draw with Preston last time out, West Bromwich Albion (WBA) managed to remain as one of the two unbeaten Championship sides (W4, D4) and are justifying their early season tag as one of the promotion favourites. Even so, the hosts are currently on their longest run of consecutive league draws, since a run of three in the 2017/18 season, when they followed up that streak with a 1-0 defeat.
  • The Baggies’ last game marked only the third time this Championship season where they have fallen behind. You can’t write WBA off if they do fall behind though, given that they’ve drawn three (L1) of the last four Championship games to see them do so. Coincidentally, that run actually began with a 2-2 draw vs none other than Queens Park Rangers (QPR).
  • A promising start for QPR has turned to dust, following back-to-back 2-1 defeats against Bournemouth and Bristol City. This game looks a much harder test on paper than their last one, but the play-off hopefuls will not write off their dreams of promotion, even if they fall to a third straight Championship defeat for the first time since December 2020.
  • To their credit, however, the ‘Rs’ have defied outsider status to avoid defeat in 14 of their last 22 away league games entered as underdogs (W9, D5, L8). In any case, recent H2Hs give neutrals reason to hope for a high scorer, as seven of the last nine mutual clashes at The Hawthorns have seen both teams score and combine for at least four match goals.
  • Players to watch: With two goals and as many assists, WBA’s Matt Phillips has contributed to four goals across his last five Championship appearances. As for QPR, Sam McCallum’s only two goals for the club have come during those two recent defeats.
  • Hot stat: Only Fulham have had more shots in the league than WBA’s 135 so far (16.88 per-match on average).
