Villarreal – Getafe Match Preview

  • It feels strange to be mentioning last season’s UEFA Europa League winners as potential candidates for the drop, but with just three points separating Villarreal and 18th-placed Cádiz ahead of this round, it’s not without reason to place them in that category. However, the cloud of uncertainty over boss Unai Emery has seemingly been lifted after he turned down an approach by Newcastle and pledged his future to the club ahead of the visit of relegation-threatened Getafe.
  • Turning draws into victory could hold the key to Emery’s side climbing the table, with their six stalemates so far the most they’ve ever recorded at this stage in their LL history. However, a clash with Getafe could spark a revival as they’ve won their last four La Liga (LL) games against them – their longest-ever winning LL run against the ‘Azulones’.
  • Fresh off the back of their first LL victory of the season (2-1 v Espanyol), Getafe will probably have wished for a better side to put their new-found confidence to the test against. Getafe aren’t great travellers to Comunidad Valenciana, winning just one of their last 11 visits to the Spanish region (D5, L5), whilst failing to score in eight of those lacklustre performances.
  • It’s goals that are hindering Getafe this season, with just six to their name – their lowest-ever tally at this stage of a LL season. Compounding their misery further is the fact only two of those goals came on the road, and their two away points is the joint-lowest in LL this season, although back-to-back away draws has at least given them a platform to build upon.
  • Players to watchArnaut Danjuma scoring tends to be a good omen for Villarreal, who haven’t lost any of the four LL games in which he’s found the net this season (W2, D2). Meanwhile, Getafe are becoming somewhat reliant on Enes Ünal, who’s scored their last three LL goals.
  • Hot stat: Villarreal have scored just one LL goal before the half-hour mark this season.
