Legia – Spartak Moscow Match Preview

  • UEFA Europa League (UEL) Group C remains on a knife edge, with fourth-placed Legia Warsaw guaranteed to secure second place with victory over current second-placed occupants, Spartak Moscow. A victory in the reverse fixture in Moscow on matchday one formed part of back-to-back wins to open Legia’s group stage campaign and completing the double would secure their third successive H2H victory against Spartak.
  • Legia’s solid start was quickly extinguished by the three successive UEL defeats that followed, in which they conceded ten goals and hit just two in reply. Their leaky defence is an even bigger issue when you take into account Legia’s blunt nature – with just four group stage goals so far and no more than one in any game.
  • Spartak’s task is also simple – win here to be in with a chance of qualifying as group winners, whilst a host of other permutations could see Spartak finish as group runners up or transfer into the UEFA Europa Conference League. In their quest for three points to hopefully top the group, travelling to Poland could prove to be a blessing for Spartak, who have never lost on Polish soil (W2, D1).
  • In terrible form in their domestic league where they languish in mid-table, Spartak have at least enjoyed their travels away from Russia, winning at Napoli and drawing at Leicester. Coach Rui Vitória will want to address their failure to keep a UEL clean sheet this campaign, something they’ve not managed in any of their last ten competitive games either, although they are averaging nearly two goals per game in the UEL so far which could set up an exciting climax to this group.
  • Players to watch: Mahir Emreli has netted two of Legia’s four UEL group stage goals this term – both of which came before half-time. Meanwhile, Aleksandr Sobolev has scored from the spot in his last three goalscoring appearances.
  • Hot stat: Spartak have kept just one clean sheet in their last 25 UEL outings (including qualifiers).
