West Ham – Norwich Match Preview

  • West Ham United have made a winning start to 2022 in both the Premier League (PL) and the FA Cup, although manager David Moyes remains unhappy about fixture congestion. Maintaining his unbeaten record against opposite number Dean Smith (W3, D1) might cheer him up as his side look to go six H2Hs unbeaten against Norwich City (W3, D2), after scoring 2+ goals in all five of those previous meetings.
  • The ‘Hammers’ will therefore start as clear favourites, especially as they haven’t lost a home H2H since March 1989 (W5, D4), although they’ll want to iron out some inconsistent recent home league form (W1, D1, L1) if they’re to maintain their European qualification push. They’ve scored in all nine of their home PL games this term though, and must extend that run if they’re to prevail in a series of upcoming fixtures here against bottom-half sides.
  • Norwich also claimed an FA Cup victory at the weekend, but their 1-0 win over third-tier Charlton Athletic was unconvincing and they’re still searching for a first PL win since November (D2, L5). They failed to score in each of the last five of those fixtures (L5), and also conceded during the first ten minutes in three of them, so the PL’s bottom side travel here in worrying form.
  • The ‘Canaries’ briefly found some form on the road (W1, D1) around the time of Smith’s November appointment, but have since lost 3-0 in their last two PL away games – both in London. They’ve problems at both ends as they’ve scored just three times on the road in the league this term, while averaging 2.56 goals conceded per PL road trip!
  • Key battleManuel Lanzini has scored three first-half goals across West Ham’s last two matches, while Norwich stopper Tim Krul kept his first clean sheet in five matches on Sunday.
  • Hot stat: Prior to the round, a league-high 78% of West Ham’s PL home fixtures this season have produced over 2.5 goals.
