Nottingham – Coventry Preview

  • Nottingham Forest picked up just a single point across their first seven Championship matches this season, including a 2-1 loss to Coventry City on the opening matchday, but ahead of this grudge match they find themselves in the playoff mix on the back of an impressive eight-game unbeaten league run (W5, D3). After grabbing a 4-1 win over Blackpool last time out, manager Steve Cooper gushed that his team were “really hitting their stride this season” as Forest look to break their 23-year top-flight absence.
  • With at least seven sides likely battling for two playoff spots, Forest will be hoping to extend upon their recent formidable six-game home Championship record here (W5, D1). Following a 3-1 win over fellow top-six contenders QPR in their last home league outing, Forest can also make it four consecutive Championship home wins for the first time since March 2019 with another success!
  • Coventry needed a dramatic ninth-minute stoppage-time goal to snatch a late point against Blackburn Rovers that had their manager Mark Robins puffing that “it’s taken about two-and-a-half years off my life, no doubt, at a minimum.” Extending that momentum with a win here would lift them to within two points of Forest and see them land a first H2H league double since 2004/05.
  • The ‘Sky Blues’ will have to defy history to achieve that though, having not won an away H2H league game since August 2004. Robins is also looking to become the first Coventry manager since 1969/70 to defeat Forest twice in a single league season, and if they do it the visitors’ success may arrive late, as seven of Coventry’s last 14 away Championship goals have arrived beyond the 80th minute.
  • Players to watch: Brennan Johnson has scored Forest’s final goal with four of his last six Championship home strikes, whilst Viktor Gyökeres has equalised for Coventry with three of his previous four Championship goals, and did so in the reverse H2H too.
  • Hot stat: Five of the last seven H2Hs have ended with a 2-1 scoreline.
