Dynamo Kyiv – Benfica Predictions and Preview

  • Dynamo Kiev are hoping to end a 31-year wait for a win over Benfica – after recording their only ever success (and scoring their only goal) against the Lisbon giants back in 1991 (W1, D1, L4) – when the two teams meet over two legs in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) playoffs. These sides actually faced off in the group stages of this competition last year, when a draw and defeat against the Portuguese outfit contributed to the Blue and Whites finishing bottom of the group with zero wins.
  • Having to play this game in Łódź, Poland, the 2-0 loss to Benfica in December proved to be Dynamo’s penultimate game before the war in Ukraine ended their season. There are still signs of rustiness in attack after an eight-month domestic lay off, evidenced by scoring just one first-half goal across their four UCL qualifying matches, although just two goals conceded over those games shows they can keep things tight.
  • Benfica, meanwhile, reached the UCL quarter-finals last season and have started the current campaign in blistering fashion by winning four successive games. They are yet to concede a goal before the hour mark, but that has not stopped 75% of their matches from containing four or more goals thanks to an impressive average of three goals per game from the Portuguese giants.
  • That strong defensive record is a continuation from last season when Roger Schmidt’s side kept five clean sheets in eight away ties in this competition (W3, D4, L1), and they will now hope to extend a strong away record in UCL qualifying matches, having lost just one in eight (W3, D4) since 2009.
  • Players to watchVitaliy Buyalskyi, Dynamo’s top scorer last season, has three goals and three assists in his last nine UCL qualifiers, while Gonçalo Ramos has scored ten of his last 14 Benfica goals after half-time, including two of four this season.
  • Hot stat: Benfica last won five consecutive games at the start of last season, a run which also included coming through UCL qualifying.
